Ramona and Audrey

Ramona is turning 92 in a few days. My mother is 80 and she and Ramona have been friends for 53 years. Ramona lives with her son, Jere, who treats her like a queen. A couple weeks ago my mother and I visited them and they gave us a tour of their yard. Ramona on the left and my mother on the right. Let me add, I love a clothes line that still gets used.
There's nothing wildly spectacular about what grows in their small yard, but it's tended to lovingly by the both of them and it's pretty and that's the important thing. It's what I wish for my own yard.

My Sweet Mother
Smelling The Sweet Peas

Here I am with Jere and Ramona. There was a story about this large planter, but the details have flown out of my head. Ramona and her family lived next door to us when I was kid. Jere and I, along with all the neighborhood kids, played together outside all day long.

This is their collection of ducks and ducklings. All were obtained by visiting thrift shops over the years and a few were gifts.

For a small yard, they have a lot of garden art and every piece is special to them with a story behind it. Oh, how I enjoy garden stories!

It was lovely way to spend a summer afternoon and so I'm sharing a little of it with you.

  2. Love the duckies. What a charming story of Mother & friend. As a child we always planted sweet peas along the side of Mother's garage ... you don't see them much anymore. What a lovely time you had ... TTFN ~ Marydon

  4. Donna,
I love how the gardening bug gets passed on to younger generations. Their garden is very pretty and well-maintained. And I like the photo of your mom smelling the sweet peas! That one is priceless!

  6. How wonderful that your mother has such a dear friend at her age! I love to see anyone caring for their garden, at any age. I've never grown sweat peas, but next year I plan to for sure. No, I've never heard of that wetland area in Wisconsin. Even though I grew up in Michigan, I've never been in Wisconsin in my life. Maybe someday!

  7. Thank you for the visit in Jere and Ramona's yard, and especially for sharing dear Audrey (my mother's name, too).

I'm crazy about sweet peas, too. They bloom here in earliest spring and leave when the heat cranks up.

  20. Great blog! Thanks for visiting mine. Yes, I'm a Brett Favre fan too. When my husband and I first were married, we went to the Packer Hall of Fame. Neat place. I also got my photo taken with Brett Favre. It is weird that he is a Viking, now. But is kind of exciting too.

  21. I love posts like this. I am currently reading a book about old fashioned gardens and the art they inspired in the past. I asked my parents awhile back to find photos that included my dad's parents garden they had, but they said they couldn't find any.

I was tickled to have sweet peas growing on my front garden fence, and a little smug that they are still blooming, but after seeing the sweet peas in your post, so full and lush, I'm not as pleased with mine.
