Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - 10/15/09

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day is on the 15th of every month and is hosted by Carol at May Dreams Gardens. It's a nice way to share what's blooming in your garden and a fantastic way to visit gardens all over the world. Thank you, Carol.

The only annuals that haven't fallen victim to Jack Frost are the various snapdragons that are in containers. They still look this pretty even though the temperature has been down in the 20's a few nights.

This tiny white phlox 'David' was planted about a month ago and is already rewarding me with blooms despite the cold weather.

This picture of impatiens and hypoestes was taken last Friday. They were dead on Sunday morning. I bought the containers at a yard sale last spring. Paid twenty-five cents each.

All of the sedum 'Autumn Joy' are looking picture perfect except for a few of them where the plant stems aren't strong enough to support the large flower heads.

These ornamental grasses (name unknown) are at the end of the driveway, on both sides. They are turning a pretty gold/orange and will be even more colorful in a few weeks. Note: They look prettier when it's not snowing and the sun is shining.
I hardly ever buy pumpkins, but my sister-in-law gave me this one and I like it a lot.

These are the same trees as in my header photo. What a difference a few snowflakes make.

  2. Snow!! I thought you were kidding until I looked closer. At least you still have some fall flowers still blooming. I really like the grasses. Your picture with the snow falling on the trees is pretty.

  3. Snapdragons are such tough little fellows. I can't imagine snow now. I don't do snow well, which is why I live 'way south.

    Happy Bloom Day.

  5. joey - We can run, but we can't hide from the change of seasons. And I luv the process of going from one season to the next.

Catherine@AGardenerinProgress - Wish I was kidding about the snow.

Nell Jean - I don't always do snow well either, but I probably wouldn't do well with too much hot, humid, hazy.

Gail - Our weekend weather forecast calls for sun and temps in the 50's. That's the fall I know and luv.

  6. Hi Donna,

The snapd's are a great pink...love them! The ornamental grasses are looking fab for fall, and it looks like you are ready to carve a jack o lantern soon, or eat some p pie.
Thanks for stopping by my fam blog, and I will see If I can change that comment thing...I did get one comment from you that said Test. So I knew something must be up. Thanks, Donna.

  7. Donna,
We are having snow showers here in PA too. They will continue through the weekend. We won't have sun and temps in the 50's until Monday. Your 'Autumn Joy' looks great. Mine have all turned into their brown winter look. Happy GBBD!

  9. The snapdragons and the sedums are beautiful. I love the last shot! That's a great one, with the blazing autumn colors and the big snowflakes.

  10. The snowflakes look so pretty in photos, but I am definitely not ready for them yet! Snow flurries are in the forecast for us tonight, though. It's always sad to see the annuals die after a hard freeze, but it is inevitable. Your "Autumn Joy" is beautiful; I have the same problem with stems that can't support their full blooms.

  11. A beautiful post. I expect things will be dying here after the weekend. Love the snowflakes and the colored leaves.

  13. What a big contrast you've got here. Such lovely colored flowers still around you. And then I'm surprised with the last picture. Snow and colorful trees. Hmmm love it.

  14. I always marvel at the simple beauty of a pumpkin. I guess they're like snowflakes. No two are alike. Your flowers are lovely!

  15. Do you think you have Feather Reed Grass? That's the one I want to get for my yard, and I didn't know it would turn such a pretty color in fall!

  16. Those snapdragons are pretty sturdy! No frost here yet, so flowers are clinging on.

  17. Wow, I can't believe your autumn is already slipping away. So fast! Love your impatiens plantings. I saw a talk about the new SunPatiens which are coming out. They promise nirvana in sun loving impatiens. That'll be interesting!

  18. Yes, we need to keep snapdragons around for cold weather blooms. You got an awesome deal on those pots. They are cool! I had to look close to see the snow on the sedums and such. I love the photo of the snow in the trees!

  19. I can't believe you have snow already. Would you believe that the same day you had snow, we were in the low 90's.

  21. Rosey Pollen - All my pumpkin for pies comes directly from Libby's.

Marie - Our temp yesterday (Monday) was 63 making it a wonderful day to be outside doing yard clean up.

Flystars - Nice of you to compliment my photos but I've seen your photos and know that mine are "nuttin" compared to your great work.

sweet bay - Our blazing autumn colors are quickly turning to brown.

Rose - I've read that the autmn joy can be cut down early in the summer and then they won't get so tall and fall over. But....can't make myself do it.

ArtCricket2 - You have those lovely long falls there in KY. Ours are beautiful but short.

Cherry - We all need a cooling off period, much like tulip or daffodil bulbs.

Barefoot from Heaven - Soon the contrast will be gone and there will only be brown and white.

Brenda@Cozy Little House - I never thought about pumpkins all being different much like snowflakes, but you're right.

Msrobin - I'll have to check out feather reed grass and see if that's what we have. Thanks for the tip.

Linda - No frost? You're lucky.

Jean - I've seen the sunpatiens in the greenhouses but never in a color I like. Seems to me they were all in the orange/coral range.

Sue - Wish I'd remember to plant more snaps. They are STILL looking pretty.

Jan - 90's??? That's just not fair to either one of us. Our snow is too early and your 90 is too hot for October.
