The Pinhead and Her Fungus

I've been referred to as a pinhead before, but never has it been more apparent than in this photo of my shadow. Here I am with my big body and little head flanked on both sides by a couple of mysterious-looking fungi. I know nothing about mushrooms/fungi, so maybe someone can identify them for me.

Here are some close up shots. I'm really curious about them. They're even bigger now than when I took the pictures.

The bucket garden has been put to rest for the winter. Gardening this way was both fun and successful and I'll do it again next year. I grew tomatoes, watermelons, cucumbers and 3 different kinds of pumpkins. Will add a couple additional buckets next year.

Not many blooms left this time of year.
This is about all I have left for color and they've
been moved to the back of the house for the winter
along with all the other containers.

The pretty colored leaves are gone, too,
but the big, brown Oak leaves hang around forever.

The Coo-Coo Kid is still a big part of my life.
He talks about working on his blog,
but wants to include YouTube videos.
Trust me...the videos are not about gardening:)
We're still debating the issue.
He makes me HAPPY!

  1. The pin head thing cracked me up cause I have another dear friend with a pin head. I really never really understood until we were trying on hats one day. Then it all became very clear...she does have a pin head.

I'm thinking your photo is somewhat an optical illusion as well.

Phillip looks so cute. I'm so glad he's such a big part of your life.

  5. Hi Donna,
I enjoyed your post. I like to take photos of my shadow, too. Those fungus things are weird.

It looks like you guys are ready for whatever the weather decides to do.

  7. Those are some big puffy white mushrooms! Don't know a name, but I have seen some really good mushroom I.D sites online. They are good ones!

Hello to CooCooKid! He and his scarecrow look so cute together!

Sorry you have to put your buckets to rest now. I have planted a new variety of eggplant (a long slender white one called Gretel), two tomatoes, and corn in mine. The okra is about done, and I am looking for kale seeds or plants for those buckets...but this is our best growing season starting now!

    Enjoy that CooCooKid!

  9. Wow! Those are some large mushrooms. I never saw one like that here. I continue to work on garden cleanup too. I'm actually getting a lot done with the great weather. I still need to put down compost ane clean up the rest of the mums.

  10. Hi Donna,

Al you have to do is cut the acorn squash in half in the middle...not end to end. Does that make sense.

  12. There are those darned Packers buckets again:)

Those are some strange-looking fungi; I have no idea what they are, but they certainly look interesting. I'm putting the garden "to bed" these days, too. I'm hoping for one nice day yet when I can finish planting bulbs, or else I might be out there digging in the snow:)

Good to see the CooCoo Kid again--such a cutie, he is certainly growing up!

  13. Oh, my golly, Miss Molly....those things are huge.I have never seen any like them before. Maybe hey are eligible for the Smithsonian. LIke your shadow. It is one of the better ones I have seen. And CooCoo Kid...he is just toooo cute. I am trying to get my husband to change from FB to doing a blog, but I am failing desperately. It is really hard to track an old dog a new trick. Guess he will stay with his FB. genie

  14. You never fail to crack me up!
I love the fungi, no idea but they are gigantic!
We had one grow that large here but it was STINKY. Are those smelly?
That grandson of your is growing like a weed. A nice weed, though.
Good day to you, my friend!

  15. Hello Donna! Your pinhead photo was very droll!
I don't have a clue about the fungus. I did read somewhere recently that there is a type that ripens into a star shape, and that men's hats used to be made from it. Useful information, I know.
