I Don't Grow Irises

I don't grow irises, but that doesn't stop me from almost driving my car off the road due to iris gawking. Instead of causing an accident, I parked my car and took pictures of  these irises blooming in an unknown gardener's yard.

The name "iris" comes from the Greek word for "rainbow" because of its exceptional colors. This must be true because I read it on the internet!

So why don't you grow iris? I planted a few in the fall, but only one has bloomed so far, and now I want more, more, more!

  2. How interesting, Donna! I did not know this about the name! I know it is true because i have perused about a million different iris plants online and there are so many colors of them!!! An appropriate name, for sure!!!

Beautiful photos...and BTW...glad you pulled over to take the pics!!! Good girl!!! :)

  3. Iris's are amazingly easy to grow, seriously I do NOT have a green thumb and have managed to keep the ones in our yard alive for 6 years. Plant the bulbs in the fall, dig up and divide the bulbs every couple of years. Thats it. If you are running off the road you should find a little spot somewhere!! And that first photo is worth an accident!! Very pretty.

  4. I just started growing irises a couple of years ago because my sister was going to throw them away. Can't have that :)
That first picture with all the irises looks so pretty, love the color!

  5. I've photographed other people's gardens too. It always makes me nervous. I can picture the homeowner peeking out the window and thinking "What's that crazy woman doing in my garden snapping pictures?". But I haven't been arrested for trespassing (yet). The irises are beautiful - worth the risk!

  7. Me too, Donna, I photograph other people's garden. I go walking everyday around our neighborhood and I always take my camera with me.Sometimes I get frightened when a dog barks at me. Those are lovely Irises. I haven't tried growing them but I think I will give it a try.

Good luck to your step granddaughters this coming Friday. I hope they can make it. Dorothy's District Country Run is moved this Monday but when I checked out the forecast,it is still raining. Thank you so much for all the sweet comments you left in my blog. I really appreciate it.

    Have a nice day always.

    Hugs from down under.

  10. Gorgeous! Of course admiring other people's talent is the only way I garden at all these days. Most gardeners, I think, are pretty happy to know someone appreciates all their hard work. And that is my role -- somebody has to do it!

  11. Wow, you have some amazing pictures. >_< I love purple irises!!! They are so many this time of year! They are so pretty! 。◕‿◕。

  12. Donna, why don't you grow irises if you love them that much? I know your green thumb wouldn't have any problems with them.

  13. Sigh... those iris are so gorgeous. My favorite flower. It's a delight to see these today since they are long finished here.

  14. Then indeed it must be true, Donna :) Lovely iris photos and your father is a dear. You are so blessed to have him near you.

  15. These are pretty photos! I bet the owner/gardener would feel so happy to know you find them so beautiful to stop and take a picture of them. Get some iris, dang it, so you don't have a car accident.

  16. Oh, hey, I think we need to start an iris gawking club! That's too funny.

  17. Glad you didn't have an accident capturing these beauties, Donna:) I have only a few iris in my garden, but I hope to remedy that this fall--I love them! The best part about irises is that you can usually get free passalong divisions from someone who does grow them--I bet if you asked nicely, this gardener would even give you some:)

P.S., from my days of teaching a short unit on Greek mythology to H.S. students, I can verify that Iris was the goddess of the rainbow.

  19. I could have written your blog title, but replaced "irises" with "flowers" - LOL. I love seeing photos of beautiful flowers because I can't keep anything alive this time of year. It's so hot that only thick grasses and weeds seem to live.

  20. Hi Donna,
I was wondering, too, why you don't grow irises. Most of mine were free from different people. Some, were taken out of a dumpster at a sorority when a friend called to tell us to. I just wished the bloom time was longer.

Those are some beauties you captured.

  22. Those are wonderful. I have been known to side track (on foot or in the car) if I see some irises that I haven't seen before, too!

  23. Faye's dad was a member of the Nashville Iris Society and one of my favorite memories was of him taking Faye, Mildred, and I to some park where they had so many iris, and so many very fancy kinds. Mildred was weak, so he drove the car right up onto the lawn and up to the iris bed. He also had a lot of iris in their yard. That's what I will forever think of when I see iris.

  24. Hi Donna sorry it's been a while. I've missed your space.
But I'm so very glad you did park the car before shooting away..

    Love the colours too.
    Hugs D.

  25. Rather than have an accident you should plant some. I planted some that bloom more than once a year and they are beautiful. So easy to grow an take no special care. You often see them blooming on old farmsteads that have been gone for years. Great photos though. Thanks for sharing. Stella

  28. Hi, Donna!

It is me again here:) I've noticed you have a new header. Are those dahlias and white agapanthus? My dahlias are looking sad now because we are on our first month of winter. There are still a few buds coming out but I don't think they can make it.

Thank you for your visit and comments. Greatly appreciated. You are a great and a sweet friend. Please dont worry if you cannot visit my blog always because I understand. I am busy here too and can't visit blogs as often as I want.

Have a nice day always! Please say hello to Phillip from all of us here.

  31. I swear I commented here already, but it might have been that day that I kept getting "Blogger not available".

I just wanted to tell you that I love your new header. It makes me feel like I'm sitting in your yard enjoying the view.

  32. I don't grow irises either lol, but they pop up all over my yard every year, so the people who owned our house before us must have loved them.

Honestly? I love that they did, because it's nice to see an unexpected dash of color every spring!

  33. Thinking of you today ...

  34. Just like Sarah, the previous owners of my house planted Irises around our front and backyard. And yes, of course they are beautiful...but I don't like them because they just die to quickly for me. That some how makes me sad. Yeah, I know I'm sappy! :)
