Spring-Blooming Groundcover

Our neighbors have this Sweet woodruff growing as a ground cover under a big shade tree in their front yard. The plants are actually herbs that become invasive with too much moisture. When planted in dry shade, they're easily contained in a certain space and deliver a wonderful sweet aroma. The leaves are often used in sachets and potpourris and it's also a natural insect repellent.

These old-fashioned lilacs
have been growing in my parents'
yard for more than 50 years.
They've never once been pruned
and have never failed to deliver
beautiful flowers for all to enjoy.

This sign at a local landscape center
caught my attention and made me
think that the world still needs help
 in the "get along" department.
I can still hear Rodney King
saying these words in 1991.

Phillip planted these flowers
last weekend and will give them to
his mommy tomorrow.

       Have a beautiful Mother's Day.

  12. Hi, Donna!

Happy Mother's Day to you too.

The sweet woodruff is very nice for a ground cover. This is my first time to see this plant but the next time I will go to the plant nursery I will check out if they have woodruff.
That is so sweet of Phillip to give such beautiful flowers to his mum. I think his mum would be very happy. And I love the plant container. Nice colour.
Thank you so much Donna for the visit and comments. I really appreciate it. We are on our last month of Autumn and the nights are getting cold.

Enjoy your Spring and hope to see more blooms from your garden.

  16. Well I hope you had a Happy Mother's Day, Donna! I spent the day doing what I love best...getting dirty in the garden! I love your header with the gardening cuties! How nice you helped Phillip plant for his mom; it is so good to get him interested in these kinds of things! I wish my old fashioned lilac would have bloomed, but it just sat there, all nice and green. I think I need to move it to a sunnier spot. That's a little hard, as most areas seem to provide more shade than sun. It's just the 2nd year in my yard so perhaps I'll wait another year & if it still doesn't bloom next year, I'll move it. I have 2 Sweet Woodruff plants that I added last summer. I didn't realize they like to spread so enthusiastically. I better do a bit more research because I have them in areas that can't afford to be overtaken. Perhaps they belong on the perimeter of the yard in areas near the fence. They do look lovely w/the blooms, in your photos!

  17. I hope you had a great Mother's Day, Donna! Phillip's mom must have been so pleased with the lovely flowers--he did a great job planting them. Seeing the lilac here makes me think I should forget about pruning my shrub. It has bloomed profusely without any help from me, and that would give me one less chore to do:)

I hope this comment goes through; my last two seem to have wound up in cyberspace. Love your header!
